1. Introduction
AMPM ("we", "our", "the app") is an educational mobile application designed to help South African
students prepare for exams through video lessons and practice questions. This Privacy Policy explains
what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.
By using AMPM, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.
2. Information We Collect
2a. Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address (via Firebase Authentication)
- First name and surname
- Profile photo (optional, stored in Firebase Storage)
2b. Education Information
During onboarding, we collect:
- Age range (e.g., "13-15", "16-18", "18-24")
- Province (South African province or "Outside SA")
- Student status (e.g., high school, tertiary)
- Grade level (e.g., Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12)
- School type (e.g., government, private)
- Curriculum (e.g., DBE, IEB)
- Subject selections (e.g., Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy)
- Learning goals (e.g., "Pass matric", "Improve marks")
2c. Usage and Performance Data
As you use the app, we collect:
- Answer submissions — which questions you answered, your answers, whether they were correct,
time spent, and attempt number
- Video watch sessions — which videos you watched, watch duration, playback progress, and
completion status
- App sessions — session start/end times, duration, and activity counts
- Progress statistics — videos watched, questions completed, accuracy, XP earned, and streaks
2d. App Preferences
We store your in-app preferences, including:
- Notification settings (enabled/disabled)
- Current position in the curriculum (last watched video, selected paper/year)
- Exam dates you've set
2e. Device and Technical Data
Firebase services may automatically collect:
- Crash reports (stack traces, device model, OS version) via Firebase Crashlytics
- Basic analytics (app opens, screen views) via Firebase Analytics
2f. Leaderboard Data
Certain features, including leaderboards, display your first name and first letter of your surname (e.g., "Thabo M") alongside your score or rank. This information is visible to all other signed-in users of the app. No other personal information is shown on leaderboards.
We do not collect precise location data, contacts, phone numbers, or financial information.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected data to:
- Provide the core service — deliver video lessons, track your progress, and calculate performance
statistics
- Personalise your experience — show content relevant to your curriculum, subject, and grade
- Track learning progress — maintain streaks, XP, accuracy, and completion stats across sessions
- Improve the app — understand usage patterns to improve content and features
- Diagnose issues — use crash reports to identify and fix bugs
- Send notifications — remind you about study goals (only if you have enabled notifications)
We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
4. Data Storage and Security
- Remote storage: Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore database and Firebase Storage),
hosted on Google Cloud infrastructure
- Local storage: A local cache (Room database) stores your profile and content on your device for
faster access and limited offline viewing
- Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS/SSL). Firebase encrypts data at rest by default
- Access control: Firestore security rules ensure users can only read and write their own data.
Educational content is read-only for all users. Leaderboard entries (first name and surname initial)
are visible to all signed-in users, as described in Section 2f
5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:

We do not share your personal data with any other third parties.
6. Children's Privacy
AMPM is designed for high school students, which may include users under the age of 18.
Minimum age: You must be at least 13 years old to use AMPM. We do not knowingly collect
personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a user is under 13, we will
delete their account and associated data promptly.
Users under 18: Under the South African Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA, Section 35),
processing the personal information of a person under 18 requires prior consent from a parent or
guardian. By registering for AMPM, users under 18 confirm that their parent or guardian has consented
to their use of the app and to the collection of their personal information as described in this policy.
We take the following additional measures for younger users:
- We collect only the minimum data necessary to provide the educational service
- We do not serve advertisements
- We do not sell or share personal data with third parties for marketing purposes
- Age range is self-reported during onboarding
- Parents or guardians may contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of their
child's data
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information without your
consent, or that your child is under 13 and has registered, please contact us using the details in
Section 10 and we will delete the account promptly.
7. Data Retention
- Account data is retained for as long as your account is active
- Usage data (answers, video sessions) is retained for the lifetime of your account to provide
historical progress tracking
- Cached data on your device is cleared when you sign out or uninstall the app
8. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your data — view your profile, stats, and activity history within the app
- Correct your data — update your profile information through the app's edit profile feature
- Delete your account — permanently delete your account from the Settings screen. Your name,
email address, profile picture, and any leaderboard entries will be removed. Anonymised usage
data (activity, progress) may be retained for educational research but cannot be linked back to you.
- Withdraw consent — disable notifications or stop using the app at any time
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 10.
Under the South African Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), you have additional rights
including the right to object to processing and the right to lodge a complaint with the Information
Regulator.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted within the app and/or
at the hosted policy URL. We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document.
Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
